8/10 Mike Staff review, 08 November 2012
Total Control’s ‘Henge Beat’ LP is one of the finest post-punk albums we’ve had through this office in many a year, and here’s an EP which serves as something of an accompaniment to it, focusing on the dancier side of their gritty synthpunk aesthetic. The lead track is a demo of the excellent ‘Carpet Rash’ from that album, slowed down and synthed up for a slinky, woozy and enjoyable take.
Then there are two exclusive tracks, ‘New Age’ and ‘Algorithmic Field’, the former of which opens with weird fluttery lo-fi beats before pulsating, squelchy synth melodies are gradually introduced for a really alien-sounding but tuneful instrumental. Then the latter slips into more ambient territory with a two-chord drone, weird freely-stumbling minimal drums and a shimmering otherworldly feel.On the other side there’s two left field club mixes from Michael Ozone, taking the first two tracks into crisp techno-hop territory with stomping electronic beats in radical synthetic reinventions that are both fun and danceable. If you were into the album and don't mind a bit of techno, this EP'll please you.
