- When the Devil Goes Blind by Charlie Parr

Celebrated guitar and banjo picker Charlie Parr is back with a new LP and it’s a proper pro deal from start to finish here. Eleven beautifully recorded slices of his distinctive trad-Americana with lots of nimble bending and sliding and twanging from his weapons of choice accompanying Parr’s confident, powerful, rough-edged voice.
Many modern Americana singer-songwriters ruin their chances of entertaining me by being sentimental or self-pitying but he’s got a more direct, engaging approach which means that even when he’s singing about doom and gloom it’s in an almost conversational, by-the-by kind of way which is really charming and makes the songs sound like they’ve been rattling around in your head for ages without your knowledge, waiting for him to bring them out.Business Lady has just pointed out he’s not shying away from the cheesy aspects of his craft here, but that’s folk music for you isn’t it? He’s hardly out to keep anybody guessing here, and things do regrettably go a little bit Seasick Steve in a somewhat unnecessary but spirited stomp through ‘Ain’t No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down’, but these lively, approachable cuts are beautifully recorded and showcase his excellent voice and more importantly his nimble picking skills, which really are of the highest order.
