This record is very mysterious-looking but what I’ve managed to glean from the press release is that this is a vinyl release of a Ty Segall album originally released on cassette in an edition of 100 in 2010 and now remastered for vinyl in an edition of 450, most of which were distributed via a subscription series but we’ve managed to score a handful of the very few copies which did make it out to shops, so once it’s gone I doubt you’ll be seeing it again.
It’s really weird compared to his other albums, with a combination of cut-up samples, weird jams and interludes, and Segall’s trademark raucous rock’n’roll action, with each side containing a single seamless sound collage rather than a collection of distinct tracks, drifting from lo-fi musique concrete to skronky blown-out rockers via a cryptic collection of cluttered sonic detritus.
It doesn’t have the immediacy or crispness of his other solo albums, and gives the impression of having been intended as a repository for songs and ideas which he could find no other home for, but it’s interesting to hear him dabbling in sound art and the songs themselves, when they come (and there’s a generous handful scattered around the 45rpm LP), are always up to Segall’s amazingly consistent standards, my favourite being a screamy glam stomper about two thirds of the way through the second side. This alternation between awkward experimentalism and blistering punky rock is reminding me a little of Tropical Trash, actually, which can’t be a bad thing.Oh, and at one point he busts out a slacker rock version of ‘Happy Birthday’. If you’re new to Segall I’d probably start with ‘Melted’ or ‘Slaughterhouse’ or ‘Twins’ because this record is very confusing in places but if you’re a fan like me this is, well, another Ty Segall record! He’s on such a winning streak right now that he could shit on a slice of toast and it’d look like Jesus.
