- Dance Classics Vol.II by NHK yx Koyxen

Kouhei Matsunaga’s work under his various aliases (NHK, NHKyx, Internet Magic, Koyxen, NHK’Koyxen...) is often experimental and oblique and to be honest can be a little too much like hard work for me, but these ‘Dance Classics’ titles he’s been dropping on Pan, a label from whom I’m used to expecting a bit of a challenge, have been marvellously listenable, with NHK displaying the most playful, danceable side of his output.
The first one was awash with minimal, stumbling techno beats and clever little melodies for a head-nodding journey that’s as suited to home listening as it is the dancefloor, with skittering, detailed beats, clicks and drips, weird disembodied loops and a constant kinetic murky bass drum bounce, occasional glitchy touches but never overdone.
It’s quite an otherworldly sound that he creates but a crisp, airy and defined one with a sophisticated cool, a nod to the old school and a glint in its eye. Particularly enjoying the nihilistic post-dubstep hypno stomper that closes this LP, ‘601’, but once again the whole LP’s a winner. Whether or not you've got the first one (which I also recommend), if you’re interested in techno at all this is a record you won’t regret investing your time in.
