If I hear another drum machine today I’m going to squeal. What we have here initially is something described by Mike as ‘well Schools documentary’. After last week’s Pye Corner Audio (mmmm pie) record can you take any more of something that sounds like it was incidental music for ‘You and Me’? Yes? Well here it is...sort of. Limp drum machine clicking away? Check. ‘Analogue’ synths? Check. Naive melodies? Check. But the difference here is the very rude interruptions of a low voiced singer, like a young Ian Curtis hollering along inappropriately to the theme tune to ‘Words and Pictures’.It may be out of place but this is what is keeping my interest piqued and stopping the whole thing being as sickly as a night spent on the sofa devouring ginger cake. It gives the music a darker feel and with the addition of some well placed synths allows a sound more akin to the dark early explorations of Human League and Cabaret Voltaire. Like Phil Oakey, he only has a range of about one note but it does make a difference. Throw in some John Carpenter-esque soundtracky stuff and you are there. Another great example of equal opportunities record making, throw any old shit out and we’ll recommend it. Recommended.
