When I started this review I briefly got this band mixed up with their contemporaries Holy Fuck, causing a brief “this isn’t what I expected at all!” moment before I realised my mistake. Anyway, this is quite a brash bit of weirdpop with brassy sounding synths playing bold melodic hooks with bright jangly guitars and quite smooth, nonchalant vocals. It’s got quite a classic ‘80s pop feel that’s hard to put my finger on but there’s elements of bands like Echo & The Bunnymen and even Dexy’s Midnight Runners and Roxy Music going on. It’s a proper old-fashioned pop song, kind of understated but a bit wacky at the same time. Real charming stuff that’s bound to go down well at the indie disco.Flip it and there’s a warm, shuffly instrumental called ‘Bombs Away’ which has a co-writing credit for a certain Ariel Pink, who apparently used to be in this band. Finally ‘Unlock The Door’ is a slightly folky bit of gentle pop which is quite nice, if a little uneventful. It’s all about the A side really though.
