Got a weird pairing on this split 7” from Drag City, with Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy teaming up with regular collaborator Matt Sweeney for a nostalgic bit of country-folk on the A side while Billy “ZZ Top” Gibbons has a contribution of his own on the flip.

The Sweeney/Billy number is a smooth Americana heartstring-tugger with Oldham’s plaintive, husky voice taking centre stage for a mournful radio-friendly ballad with tasteful fingerpicking and some wistful slide guitar. Fans of these two’s alt-country stylings won’t fail to be caught up in the silky, tear-stained romance of it all.

On the other side, the beardier Billy drops a tasty glam-plodding hypno riff with a lazily paced Tom Waits-esque shuffle groove and cool synth flourishes. It’s totally self-assured stuff with classic-rock stoner vibes and a little bit of call and response between his guitar and vocals later on, although he wisely keeps things mostly instrumental, busting out a super-casual solo and everything. It’s fair to say that I’m enjoying this Gibbons cut a whole lot more than I expected.
