The Beatles are at their most whimsical, bizarre and psychedelic here, but there's so many perfect pop songs you forgot to notice that it's one of the more off the wall ones. Sandwiched in-between the baroque pop masterpiece 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' and the sprawling 'White Album', 'Magical Mystery Tour' is a short but sweet album which has permeated all psychedelic pop to come. Featuring the classics 'I Am The Walrus', 'Penny Lane', 'Strawberry Fields Forever', 'Baby You're a Rich Man' and 'All You Need Is Love', it's a record as essential as any Beatles album.

9/10 Tom 30th May 2018I always used to think that Magical Mystery Tour was one of the lesser Beatles albums, but it actually contains some of their best and most interesting songs. Forgetting the loose 'Magical Mystery Tour' premise of the title track, when you dig into the album you find gem after gem; "The Fool on the Hill" and "Penny Lane" are among McCartney's career best, and even the campy "Your Mother Should Know" is great; Lennon unleashes the bizarre and still incredible "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "I am the Walrus" as well as the fantastic "Baby You're a Rich Man". The instrumental "Flying" is a wonderful stoner diversion to unwind to, while Harrison's unnerving "Blue Jay Way" is one of the band's most experimental songs. They even chuck "All You Need Is Love" at the end of the album for the plebs who need a good old-fashioned sing-along single. Great stuff.
