- The Mystery of Heaven by Jozef Van Wissem & Jim Jarmusch

The opening of this record immediately reminds me of Songs: Ohia’s ‘The Lioness’ - a wearily picked chord progression cutting through silence. Instead of turning into a series of depressive neofolk classics, however, Van Wissem & Jarmusch instead veer into into a fascinating album of psychedelic instrumentals with Jim on electric guitar and feedback and Joe on lute and 12-string.It’s quite a varied listen, veering from slow-flowing, mystical passages of feedback and vibrato and fuzz, drifting and droning around one another in a swirling distorted time-warp of warm scrap-tones, while elsewhere the lute and guitar tinkle delicately in near-silence, or with lonely feedback swells. On one track pale celebrity actress Tilda Swinton narrates a piece which made more than one of us in the office feel genuinely uncomfortable, but the rest of the album is really relaxing, simple, atmospheric music which feels really timeless and cinematic. Hats off.
