9/10 Ant Staff review, 21 December 2012
A much needed CD issue of this trilogy, previously only available on vinyl direct from the label and now somewhat collectable. The audio has been remastered especially for the digital version. To be perfectly honest the vinyl pressings sound like shit. The best move would be to save yourself some dosh and get the audio sounding clean and crisp as it does on the digital versions.
If you have the vaguest interest in Eleh then you’ll pretty much know the score by now - Heady and heavy drone works straight outta the La Monte Young/ Eliane Radigue school. These releases marked a shift in direction for Eleh, delving into previously unexplored areas of the frequency spectrum and a slightly less minimal approach, working more with multiple layers of tone. Generally speaking I’d say the tracks were more colourful with some high pitched chirping and squiggling, and I think at times even some location recordings may have been introduced to the modular synthesizers. The overall mood throughout is of isolation and reflection and serve as the perfect soundtrack to think, gather your thoughts and wonder what the fuck you’re doing on this planet.
Not my favourite set of Eleh tracks out of the ever growing catalogue but if you’ve been fantasizing about owning these since the originals disappeared then do take the opportunity as I suspect this 3CD set won’t hang around for too long either.
