I remember Shinies’ previous single was a total Teenage Fanclub worshipping bit of summer indie pop, so it should be no surprise that we’ve got a similar thing going on here, with lead track ‘Ennui’ sounding like Ash playing a Dinosaur Jr track, so ‘90s it hurts. There’s a nice fuzzy wall of almost shoegazey guitars though, it’s making me very nostalgic.

The melodies are really upbeat and there’s some totally great simple guitar hooks. On the flip there’s ‘Eighteen’ which continues to plough the same Fannies-esque furrow with jangly results, maybe even a touch of Ride in there but with a totally uplifting chorus towards the end which is actually reminding me of early Feeder in a way which feels guiltily, nostalgically indulgent. Hearing it is like unearthing some old indie-pop single from ‘96ish that you’d somehow missed at the time. Pretty fun.
