8/10 ReviewBot300 Staff review, 23 October 2012
Here are two extended improv jams from the one-off five-piece of post-takoma guitarist Cam Deas, Botuh dancer and improviser Chie Mukai and the Parisian three-piece improv unit Lena Circus, who between them scrape and twang their way through about 45 minutes of mystical free-drone chunter.Mukai drones away on er-hu and voice, Deas is on 12-string, and Lena Circus variously contribute guitar, reeds and percussions. The pieces are often very minimal and the guitar and percussion sparse and arrhythmic, developing layers of weird flowing texture and disembodied gliding drones. It’s relaxing but unsettling, particularly when things get a bit more panicked later on. Weird, dark, elegant improv-chatter.
