While I must confess to not being familiar with any of the band’s original material, I’m finding this a very enjoyable listen, with lots of ‘80s-sounding synths and intricate rhythms, playful looping inhabiting these cleverly structured songs. It’s reminding me in places of Was Not Was, Scritti Politti, Pet Shop Boys, Devo, but with a bit of the cheeky spontaneity of the Ariel Pink/R Stevie Moore collab.

It’s downright silly in places in fact, and with the dark synthpop edge as well it feels to me in places like the kind of band Vince Noir in the Mighty Boosh would be in. It’s not a comedy album per se but they certainly don’t shy away from playing it for laughs. Or at least I hope they’re playing it for laughs! I’m entertained anyway. It’s not all hilarity, though, and when they slow the pace on penultimate track ‘Seasong’ it’s an affecting Notwist-meets-Hood bit of clicky wisticism (you know, mystfulness). Cool album of busy, playful sythery-pokery.
