Curious story about these guys. The lead rapster/public face is called ‘Wiki’ and he’s a handsome young lad of Puerto Rican/Irish descent with a cracking monobrow, one of those strange wolf-man-effect eyebrow mutations that can either make or break a person. In the picture I’ve just seen he looks anything but fazed by such a trivial concern. He probably likes the attention.

He’s apparently an old punk is Paddy ‘Wiki’ Morales and resides in the Harlem area of town. He’s turned his skills to the production of hip-hop at the grand old age of 18 with his RatKing crew and although I’m anything but an expert in this field I’d go so far as saying it definitely has a fair bit of oooomph and guts, although I’d rather trust the opinions of Ant, Clint, Li’l Biz (Business Lady’s daughter that has just taken over her job ESG-style) or our old ‘Hop Head Brett than my own and three of them aren’t on hand at the moment. Rats.

The music relies on a lot of hazy backward-masked shizzle and strange vocal edits to give it character, bass-lines are catchy enough, brooding and low-slung. I reckon the rapping sounds kind of okay, bit nasally but not too irritating and the subject matter doesn’t immediately appear to be lyrically as loathsome as that unpleasant little gimp out of Odd Future. Check out some clips yourselves if you like yer hip-hop,  there’s no way XL would throw their money behind anything terminally useless surely. It ain’t quite doing it for me like, say, Shabazz Palaces but I think this is perhaps coming from a grittier DIY realm. Green vinyl, ace sleeve...just do it.
