6/10 Clinton Staff review, 09 November 2012
Features David Best from Fujiya & Miyagi it says on the sleeve. Presumably not the David Best I used to work with, a man who coined the ‘shuffling bits of paper around’ phrase that perfectly describes much of the office work I’ve done since. He’ll be in his sixties now so I doubt he’ll be making the kind of oddball but tuneful electronica I’m finding on this CD.It’s a mixture of low end sleazy electronica and almost spoken word type vocals which sit somewhere between Alabama 3 and The Beloved. Ocassionally it hits the spot, the instrumentation is generally in the electro-funk territory, on ‘You Bore Me to Tears’ everything becomes a lot more cinematic with slinky Bond-style horns meshing nicely with the whispered vocals. I’m reminded a little of latter-era Sparks or Jarvis Cocker’s Relaxed Muscle project.
