Simple by Sylvain Chauveau

Sylvain Chauveau is French but lives in Brussels. He's one of the slightly lesser known neo-classical composers and is often used as a footnote if folks talk about Max Richter or Nils Frahm. Here is the first ever vinyl pressing of his collection of work for film and rare and unreleased tracks. It is an essential document of a 'much praised but not as well known as he should be' composer.

I can’t believe it’s been ten years since Un Autre December came out. Mind you it’s been 21 years since Nevermind came out and it doesn’t seem like that was that long ago either! I also spotted there’s 90 different versions of that when I was checking the date that came out...I’m essentially saying time flies.

And this here album is a reminder of that as it’s a compilation of Sylvain’s tracks spanning from 1998 to 2010. The tracks included are mainly from film scores and they’re all out of print, hard to get hold of or unreleased. So for the fans of Chauveau I’d say this is essential. It features the full breadth and style of his work ranging from the simple piano tracks to more stringy tracks to his more experimental electronic compositions.

I’m enjoying listening to this as there’s quite a few tracks I’ve not heard before but they’re punctuated by ones that I’m familiar with and really like. So it’s working well with me! If you’ve not heard him before he follows a more sombre heartstring-tuggy path and you can imagine these tracks being used at particularly gut wrenching moments in films. So for a good 40 minutes you can sob your face off and pretend you’re watching bad things happen to people.
