9/10 Brian Staff review, 01 November 2012
Strike me down, this album sounds stunning through headphones. I was most taken with ‘Lixiviation’, a set that was more concerned with the sound-art/jingle/incidental music side of things. ‘Seven Waves’, however is a more song-based set of beautiful new-age electronic pop from 1982. Ciani infuses her work with such a tactile sense of amazement and wonder, hearty injections of cascading, twinkling mischief and some of the sweetest lulling synthesizer arpeggios this man can handle right now. This is the sort of music I’d like to hear played in a Natural History Museum or huge futuristic walk-in aquarium. It is that transcendental and relaxing and suggests that all your wildest dreams may be obtainable. There’s hints of the peaceful nature of Jurgen Muller’s ‘Science of the Sea’ about this gorgeous record, also something undeniably grand and cinematic. Her sound is often characterised by that kind of charming ‘80s American pomposity that could grate in the wrong hands but Suzanne makes it all seem celebratory and inclusive. A truly huggable album that will make all the bad things in your life disappear.
