- Tajemnica Enigmy (Secret Enigma - 1968-1981) by Andrzej Korzynski
9/10 Brian Staff review, 01 November 2012
Well the previous two soundtracks released by this chap have evaded my ears although I have heard them in the context of their particular allocated celluloid journeys, the score devoted to ‘Possession’ being particularly remarkable, helped by the fact it is probably my favourite ever “horror” film. Not so much horror in fact, more psychological art-house headfuck from Mars via Berlin.
Mr Korzynski has 22 of his pieces lovingly compiled here including prime excerpts from the three Zulawski films. This Polish auteur definitely gives his music a classy sheen; even when it falls into the realms of poppy lounge-jazz-kitsch, it is still really groovy and rich with swinging psychedelic soul, rather than the naffer Western end of things from the era. His orchestral stuff is rather thrilling too, picking stray leaves from the avant-garde to give a particular piece added depth and mystery. Some of these numbers would have sounded great in many a James Bond/mystery/thriller film of the era, others come across as lost psychedelic funk fuzzbombs that would have scorched holes in dancefloors in discerning late beatnik ‘60s clubs. This is a fabulous introduction to his fine work and I implore you all to dig in and drink heavily. Careful though, this is Polish vodka, not the crap you get in this country...
