8/10 Mike Staff review, 21 November 2012
This is the second 12” EP by London’s Cheatahs, who feature members of Male Bonding and Weird Dreams, treating us to four more songs of their nostalgic-sounding shoegazey post-grunge-style ‘90s indie rock. It delights me that this aesthetic is back in vogue because I grew up in the ‘90s. It’s all warm, hazy washes of trebly guitar fuzz underpinned by a steady drumbeat and nice clean bass tone. Bands it’s reminding me of include Beezewax, the Jesus & Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, Dinosaur Jr...yeah, that’s pretty much the ballpark they’re playing in.It’s all making me rather misty-eyed for my late ‘90s heyday when everything was new and exciting and I hadn’t been battered down and jaded by the relentless realness of the outside world. If you’re into other modern bands doing the late ‘90s thing - Cloud Nothings, Eagulls, Mazes, Easter, etc - here’s another name to make a note of. Now they just need to follow these promising EPs with a killer album. No pressure dudes.
