After Jodey’s ‘Plus Ten’ 2CD was hideously delayed you’d be forgiven for thinking Rephlex had fallen asleep on the job and then this cracking 2CD set arrives just a few weeks later and what an ace surprise it was too. If you’re familiar with Jodey’s sounds then you pretty much know what to expect, that is supreme high quality electronic music that encompasses techno, electro and acid, all with a distinct Braindance flavour. I’ve read a bit that he sounds like AFX and although you can clearly hear an influence at times, I think his tracks have a lot of his own personality injected into them. ‘Steel Erector’ demonstrates he’s more than just another AFX wannabe clone.

The tunes here are vibrant and colourful, sometimes dark and creepy and simultaneously euphoric. It’s not difficult to hear just why Rephlex have been nurturing him. None of the tracks have titles listed on the artwork and none of them are particularly long, each one is concise and does its job. Extra marks for the industrial artwork too. You really get the feeling he’s just making sounds he enjoys and not led astray by whatever else might be cool or fashionable in electronic / dance music. The only bad thing I can say about this collection is that the first CD keeps fucking getting stuck in my computer! It would have been nice to have a vinyl edition but that’s a minor quibble. New JK material is always welcome round these parts - Keep ‘em comin’!
