BJ Nilsen and Helgi Thorssen go back to business after a brief excursion into nu-kosmische terrain on their ‘Big Shadow Montana’ LP. The story goes that the artists spent a few days snowed in at their studio without food or drink, waiting for the snow to melt. They ceased the opportunity to create audio which reflected their situation (one similar to that which Hair Police found themselves in for their ‘Totaled And Stranded’ recording). The results are introverted electronics which brilliantly translate a feeling of isolation and helplessness and the confusion and disorientating physical and mental states of not knowing how much time had elapsed. Locked away from the world outside they created their own internal world which only existed for those moments.

Closing ones eyes it’s easy to be transported and feel locked inside a snow covered bubble located somewhere in the Icelandic wilderness. Occasionally there are glimpses of light, sometimes feeling hallucinatory, much like a mirage. The sounds of howling winds and icy sonics often recall Thomas Koner’s classic isolationist trilogy (Nunatak/ Teimo / Permafrost). Although the atmospherics here are far less minimal with lots of snatches of peculiar sound captured through powerful microphones penetrating the snow and some strange distant voices. Was that a rescue vehicle outside? Or psychosis from sleep deprivation??? Pure audio claustrophobia at its finest. Highly recommended.
