I was a bit disgruntled with Lotus Plaza’s (Mr Deerhunter guitarist Lockett Pundt) last album. I loved the first one but despite the odd killer track it all went a bit over my head. His side on this split 10” is much better, showcasing the sound he has made his own over the last few years; namely an indiosyncratic take on shoegaze with  scattershot drums, driving bass and heavily effected looping guitars. He must owe the early Disco Inferno some debt surely, this is very very similar to tracks on their ‘In Debt’ compilation.

On the flip he collaborated with his fiancee as Nice Weekend. It sounds very much like Lotus Plaza heading off into a ‘60s girl group direction with Wall of Sound trademark production, fuzzy choppy guitars and sweet female vocals.  It has the sound that a lot of groups are after at the moment such as last week’s stars September Girls, a surfy ‘50s-influenced fuzz pop. It won’t knock anyone’s socks right off but its a pleasant enough journey nonetheless.
