Like anyone, I can have a low voice if I want to- especially if I’m in full on seduction mode (readers, please calm yourselves) . I’m not sure how low it would be if my name was Rupert but thats more than enough reason to give Maigret Jnr main person Rupert Davies a firm thump on the back. His voice is dark, trembling and low and has a very Springsteen-ish vibe about it (but low key ‘Nebraska’ Springsteen not the one nodule away from a saxophone as shown on his more commercial work. The lolloping trip hop beat also recalls Brucie’s ‘Streets of Philadelphia’. Ruperts background is in hip hop which kind of makes sense but he makes a bloody good fist of being a noir-ish crooner. On the flip, his voice is ever lower and crooner-ish. Again the beat is shuffly and a bit 80’s in style hinting that it could have possibly been cobbled together on an ipad. But his voice is good, think Richard Hawley, Jon De Rosa, The National etc.
