- Mad Love by Cheval Sombre

The sad horse himself Cheval Sombre is back with another album of slow psychedelic pop, once again with buddies Sonic Boom and Dean Wareham in tow, among others. This album is a collection of sad, plodding songs with a rich and unusual sound palette and a somewhat spiritual(ized?) feel. It’s always melodic and somewhat hypnotic as the songs casually unfold with echoed vocals wrapped in ethereal space-drone choogle.Sometimes it’s Nick Drake-esque sad man folk, sometimes more of a Low-meets-Sparklehorsey slow-pop, while elsewhere it heads into full astral hypno-wig-out realms with throbbing synth drones and eastern-sounding twangs and chattering tape manipulation. It’s slow-paced, tasteful psychedelia all the way, basically, from drifty neofolk to cosmic experimentalism, with a dreamy tension that makes me think of a much less fuzzy take on the slow-motion blurred pop of Grouper or S ND Y P RL RS. Recommended for those who like things slow.
