- Wound Response by Rhodri Davies

Phil has handed this to me telling me that The Wire like it, so by my educated guesswork it’s probably the least unpalatable thing on the little stack of morbid bum-outs that’s found its way onto the reviews pile at this early point in the week. It’s by Rhodri Davies, who’s been making records with his lap harp for a while now although he doesn’t come out with them often and this is the first I’ve heard.
The sound is not what I expected from a harp record, a loud, distorted, crackling screech of a sound like a high pitched pedal note tremolo on a guitar, but as you listen closer hypnotic repeated melodic shapes start to develop in a swirling mass of fuzzed out note clusters.I was struggling to penetrate the fuzz at first but now that I’ve settled into it it’s quite soothing, with an almost Moondog-esque polyrhythmic percussiveness to the note patterns in places, and that palpable release of tension as the final notes ring out at the end of each track. It’s quite harsh sounding but melodically it’s dense and complex and quite soothing. I suspect if a “normal person” catches you listening to it they’ll think you’re a mental though.
