‘An Idea And Its Map’ is straight up serious business indeed. Their generally ethereal output has taken on new levels of atmospheric tension with blended orchestra drones replacing the usually contemplative cosmic synth workouts. It still maintains a lighter than air quality but it’s coupled with brooding overtones and a greater sense of dynamic between light and dark shades.

In parts it’s as blissful as your typical ambient records but when it gets bleak it takes on some neoclassical traits that give it an almost soundtrack-like quality. Can’t decide if I’m a fan of the constant transitions in mood but it’s a nice development for the duo and flows in a coherent manner, much like life. A turbulent but ultimately rewarding listen.
