I’m one of those moaning stuck-in-a-rut buggers that wishes Darkstar had continued experimenting within a dubstep vein as there’s three twelves by them I could not live without and that doesn’t even include the technicolour mind-warp that is “Aidy’s Girl...”. In short, although their album ‘North’ had its moments, it was pretty boring and I never revisited it. Unlike the Mount Kimbie album which I couldn’t leave the fuck alone.
This debut for new multinational colossus Waaaaarp is a pretty enough tune with loads of dreamy chimes and incredibly pretty Plaid-like tinkes. There’s a pondering bass-line, android vocal drift and some gorgeous electronic flora and fauna that is draped over the tune like a technicolour shroud. But no-one has died. There’s a cool selection of loops at the end gracing the run-out area which are much fun to play around with. I would like to review them but the gaffer said I was making him sick as I started to fuck around with the pitch control like the cretin I am.There’s nothing whatsoever on the other side which leads me to believe that Warp give not a jot about A/ the environment or B/ their potential customers finite cash-flows. This could easily have been a 7”...all this madness is housed within a super-slick and colourful glossy sleeve with glossy inner!
