In 1979 MFH were formed, in the words of the liner notes, “by Andrew Cox (Maths) and David Elliott (Geography) at Sussex University in November 1979”, they were a couple of dweebs who couldn’t really play their instruments and instead dived headlong into the cassette culture of experimental avant minimal and weirdo lo-fi post-punk.
Their recorded output has been collected here by Forced Nostalgia onto a single CD containing 19 spaced out, hypnotic vignettes with skeletal synth bleeps and loops swirling around gently, and sometimes pulsating noisily. It’s satisfying as you progress through the CD to see them honing their craft and becoming patient and accomplished masters of these tone sculptures and modular hypnobloops. It’s a pretty interesting listen actually, not only for its cultural and historical context but also the then-futuristic aesthetic they conjure up from this bedroom tinkering.
