Oh dear, I appear to have reviewed myself into a corner this morning, with it being so early in the week that there’s not enough records to review without having to dip my toe into territory where I am not remotely comfortable. This isn't objectively bad as such but it’s the kind of cloying navel-gazing experimentalism that really leaves me cold, with gorgeous passages of piano and guitar often accompanied by tedious and distracting spoken extracts from books, plays and films, sometimes overlaid into confusing babbling chaos, and sometimes mercifully accompanied by some ghostly layered singing which is much easier to stomach.
It’s a chin-stroker’s chamber-lounge wet dream but misses the target with me for the same reason as the most recent Peter Broderick did, although in fairness there are a fair few much more palatable numbers with the layered singing and at its best reminding me of Heidi Harris’s spooky neofolk but the spoken word passages the admittedly very pretty guitar and piano spareness which is the backbone of this album and clearly its greatest strength.
