- Best Of Friends/ Last Of The Summer Wine by Palma Violets

The Palma Violets are the latest London buzz thing. I always think it’s kind of telling when you read a press release and there’s no mention of the music the band make whatsoever. It’s all about the hype and bullshit. This immediately sets me off on the wrong foot.
Anyhoo folks seems to be going nuts for this so whatever I say won’t make the slightest cack of difference. The A side ‘Best of Friends’ is an early Manics style number with some nice 50’s style rock ‘n roll guitar in the verse. The chorus reminds me of The Libertines or summat like that with its shouty chirpyness. It is undoubtedly catchy but it’s also extremely turgid at the same time. The flip ‘Last of The Summer Wine’ is a more interesting proposition with it’s organ, jangly guitars and deep voiced ‘other frontman’ Sam Fryer who sings this one. It deffo sounds a little bit more classy and I’ve warmed to his vocals over the yelpy baz on the other side.
