Here’s a reissue of some classic African jazz from 1974, the latest in Matsuli’s series of rare Afro-jazz reissues. This Sowetan eight-piece put together an urgent, throbbing sound with pulsating rhythms on traditional and trap drums, warm repetitive bass cycles, energetic ivory-tinkling and breathy sax and flute over five tracks which vary in length from 3.25 to 16 minutes. It’s an absolute delight, steadily paced and rhythmically sophisticated but with a real sense of freedom and positive energy. The tracks are split into different types of Afro-jazz, although I’m too much of an amateur to pinpoint the differences - there’s Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho and Shangaan styles involved here. I’m particularly enjoying the punchy, funk-tinged explosion of closer ‘Anishilabi’ but there’s lots of fun to be had throughout.

A stunning mix of Jazz, Fusion and Afrobeat though trying to put them in any sort of order would be an exercise in futility. It continually squirms out of any pigeonhole you may try to put it in.
So you've got yer jazzy and funky double bass grooves, funky drums, what sounds like a rather cheap but expertly played percussive acoustic rhythm guitar, sax section, flute section, organ, occasional tribal drums / percussion and vocals.......... and with that little lot ....all merry hell breaks loose. Often - no usually - in completely unexpected ways. It bursts with the joyous sound you only get when great musicians make music purely for the sake of making music.
About as good as it gets actually.

Amazing album from start to finish, a perfect combination of spiritual jazz grooves and African beat rhythms that keep your toes tapping and your head nodding. Just an absolute amazing record repressed on clear vinyl, sounds perfect. If you ever come across this LP do not hesitate to buy.
