Wolf Eye Mike Connelly has been peddling queasy cosmic dark ambient drone jams with his Failing Lights alter-ego for a while now, and this latest very limited LP on super-consistent murk-merchants Holidays Records has more of it. Sometimes there’s slow, minimal synth drone melodies hanging in empty space, sometimes some processed guitar tones poking through a static mist, it’s all Bladerunner malevolence and creeping slow-burning intensity with a stumbling, human core. Not exactly the easiest of listens but never particularly abrasive, the otherworldly chirrups and clanks and drones instead transport you to a dystopian wasteland of twisted metal and lawless paranoia before the distant wibbling chimes of closer ‘Night In Color’ send the listener on his or her way with dread laden peace vibes and sinister anti-spiritual near-nothingness which is slowly overtaken by jarring, faltering, decaying fairground organ synth tones blurring the lines between a nightmare and a distant memory. It’s an unsettling, sometimes uncomfortable, but always absorbing journey.
