Here we have a lovingly-compiled collection of R&B from the golden age of Ethiopian music courtesy of the good people at Mississippi. Now I’ll be honest from the outset here, I’m not familiar enough with Ethiopian music to even know when the golden age was (I’m guessing from the style of R&B that it was most likely the ‘70s?), let alone be able to offer specific knowledge on the artists and music featured here, but from beginning to end this selection has been delighting me with loose, fun grooves, confident exotic vocal melodies and punchy brass.

Mahmoud Ahmed’s ‘Aynotche Terabu’, which opens the second side, is an immediate highlight, but this whole selection is bright, melodic and fun, with a nonstop flow of simple, infectious melodic hooks. Alemayehu Eshete’s offering sounds like a tropical Mungo Jerry. It makes me wish I was sitting on a sun lounger sipping cocktails on a deserted beach somewhere, which does bring into starker focus the grim bleakness of my actual day to day existence, but apart from that I like it!
