Here’s a newie on Flau by Liz Christine. There’s little for me to go on with the press release as it’s basically just a poem and a tracklisting, so I can’t give you any background info on her. I’ll make some up. Liz was brought up by wolves. These weren’t just any wolf...they were musical wolves who lived within the trees. They taught Liz the joys of electro acoustic music and it shows here. Liz left the wolves, moved to a city where she knocked on the first door she saw which happened to be a music studio. This Sweet Mellow Cat was born.
I’ve somehow managed to avoid track one and I’m straight onto track two which has some strange distant-sounding vocals that have fallen out of an old radio with a springy sounding beat, some bluegrass style guitar and lots of crazy samples (the cat miaowing is particularly good). Moving on to ‘Pour Cecile’ this is more of a cyclical droney number with ethereal vocals and the occasional miaow (which I think are in every track!).
The album has a strange otherworldly feel to it. Listening to this feels like I’m listening to the soundtrack of a deranged child's mind. There is something beautiful and insanely special about this release though and despite the fact it’s 15 tracks full of strange sounds and arrangements it’s eminently listenable and probably the best thing I’ve heard on the label. Utterly delightful!
