- Plateaus by Plateaus

As a man who spends more of his life than he would like reviewing records by non-American bands doing their damndest to sound American, it’s interesting to have a record here from Californian garage rockers Plateaus who sound like their main influences lie over on this side of the pond in the UK, and also on the other side of the other pond, New Zealand.
There’s more than a hint of the likes of The Clean in their ramshackle fuzz-jangle with hi-gain guitar leads and deceptively infectious, earnestly delivered vocal hooks, but there’s a melodic mid-paced Britpop/pub rock kind of jangle to it as well, it never sounds so shambling that you fear it’ll fall apart but looseness is certainly a part of their aesthetic, and the combination of searing, trebly, distorted guitar noise-wrangling and bright, hummable melodies is totally likeable. As far as their contemporaries in the USA, I’d imagine fans of Mikal Cronin, Twerps and Ty Segall will be pretty charmed by this, and if you’re enjoying recent offerings back at home from bands like Cold Pumas and Mazes you’re in with a good chance of liking it too. I’m struggling to find a specific song that jumps out at me, but I think that’s just because every one is as catchy as the last!
