Kenneth Gibson (Furry Things) and Brian McBride (Stars of the Lid) have come together to produce this lovingly executed slab of orchestral pop. First things first, it sounds like neither of the projects they are better known for, instead it showcases a penchant for the kind of ‘60s and ‘70s influenced pop made by the likes of Cardinal and Grandaddy. It’s full of strummy acoustic guitars, plaintive vocals and lashings and lashings of strings. Standout track ‘South’ recalls Beck at his most wistful with the horn and string combinations of the likes of Beirut in evidence. The ghostly spectre of the Beach Boys is present throughout, most obviously on ‘Through the Rain’ which has the staccato piano, sleigh bells and high pitched harmonies that are present in all that groups best work. They can’t quite pull off the deep chromatic chord changes, but no-one else can so lets not worry too much about that. Closer ‘To Land’ recalls the great Mojave 3 album ‘Spoon and Rafter’ with its drifting steel guitar led soundscapes combines with the churning gospel-ish melancholy of Dennis Wilson’s sole 1977 album ‘Pacific Ocean Blue’. An impressive end to what is a really good album.
