This new EP from Times New Viking is pretty much a mini-album, giving us six whole new songs on a 33rpm 12”. They start strongly too, dispensing of much of their previous lo-fi scuzz-tones for Babies-esque boy-girl garage pop of the infectious ‘Sleep-In’, tempered only by some playfully discordant background keyboards towards the end, it’s mostly a crisp, bright jangle-fuzz indie number that recalls early Urusei Yatsura, an aesthetic which happily continues throughout this collection. It’s nice to see them making more concessions to their pure pop side, and to their credit even though the dirty lo-fi aspect of their sound has been toned right down these songs still have enough of their trademark melodic nous and affection for fuzz to make it unmistakeably Times New Viking, and there’s the occasional bit of oddball noisiness to keep us from thinking they’ve lost their edge. Nice to see this lot back in business.
