Surinam is a tiny country with a population of only half a million, but with a lively musical culture, and this compilation on Kindred Spirits compiles a wealth of rare boogie and disco funk which came from the South American nation between ‘76 and ‘83 from unfamiliar names like Erwin Bouterse and the Group Roetoe, Solat, Sunny and Usje Sukatma.

It’s smooth, slick and soulful throughout, with heavily produced, arranged funk-soul fun which for the most part I would be quite happy to believe was from the USA if you told me so - the influences of American disco and funk are all-pervading throughout, making for a lively, joyous collection of laid back, danceable funk grooves. I’m particularly enjoying the minimal, almost electro-tinged whip-crack grooves of Sumy’s ‘Funkin’ In Your Mind’ complete with Sugar Hill Gang-style rapping. I defy you to listen to this without smiling. A really fun collection of consistently high quality.
