- Dubbing & Doubling by Andrea Belfi

We’ve got a peculiar and bewilderingly limited (just 50 as far as I can tell!) 12” here from maverick Berlin-based experimental percussionist Andrea Belfi with a playful and charming concept behind it and a very pretty screenprinted B-side. Belfi has taken a two-minute clip from a skateboard video and used dubbing techniques to create a percussive score where the sounds all correspond to the clicks, scratches and rumbles of the skateboards, in his own words “translating the sound of video from the language of Skateboarding to the language of Music”; growling little drum rolls and intricate clicks abound.
This has then been spliced and looped into an 11-minute long composition which was initially created for an installation where the speakers were embedded into two halves of a half-pipe, which starts out as pure percussion but decays and crackles and is joined by wavering drones and mechanical chatter and rumble towards the end. Really marvellous, relaxing sounds, and a great balance between highbrow avant-weirdness and knowing, conspiratorial playfulness. Beard-stroking music with a glint in its eye.
