Seattle’s Absolute Monarchs are new to me but apparently they’ve already got an album out and have been impressing the right people stateside. On this 7” the four-piece are knocking out a couple of tracks of chunky post-grunge art-party punk with bombastic drums and roaring vocals. A-side ‘To Hell, Let’s Masquerade’ marries that with some cool chiming guitars which keep everything just on the right side of tasteful.
The B-side ‘Thinking Thieves’ has a Floor-esque chug and monotone vocal and some casual sustained guitar licks giving it a bit of a Bitch Magnet feel too, with the vocal phrasing reminding me of Fu Manchu. This is my pick of the two here but there’s good grungey hard-riffing times to be had on both sides.
