8/10 Mike Staff review, 18 October 2012

Hype magnets Savages have made the audacious move of making their second release a live EP, although these slick recordings don’t seem to have lost a lot in translation and the live setting doubtless lends them a little more energy and spontaneity. They’re peddling an epic post-punk soup which is like a slick, jerky midpoint between Wire-esque tension and The National-esque moody vibes, with a sprinkling of krautrock and a bit of histrionic warbling over the top.

The rhythm section lay down some pretty heavy, pulsating repeato grooves in places which are totally buttering my muffins and there’s some tasty loud/quiet guitars but I’m finding the vocals a little offputting in places. Final track ‘Husbands’ has a nice frantic paranoid stop-start thing going on with a fast pulsing hi-hat and an increasingly panicked vocal performance that’s easily the most effective on the EP for me. Not perfect but very promising.
