9/10 Phil Staff review, 12 October 2012

This guy has been kicking about for a few years after releases on Caravan and Subtext and now the Bristolian has a newie on das Raster Noton. There’s a reasonably complex press release for this one which I have to admit I don’t really understand at all.

My favourite Raster Noton releases are the more precision techno based ones and this falls squarely into that category. The beats are crisp and they drop in and out at the shake of a hat when you’re left with enough silence to take a breathe of air before it all starts again. The beats are mixed with old rave sounds and lots of fuzz and distortion. Lots of fuzz and distortion! I’ve just flipped the record over and collapse starts with a load of dark industrial ambience before the syncopated (SND, Autechre style) beats come in with some hefty distortion and some meaty bass. It’s a powerful dark Scorn-esque sound they’ve created. Super strong EP!
