Newcastle doom bastards Bong have done us all a favour and reissued their self-titled debut LP on CD with an extra bonus jam for those of you who already got the album. For those of you unfamiliar with their music, it’s punishingly slow ritualistic weed rock with sitar drones, vocal drones, guitar drones and slow, riffing. Think Sleep meets Carlton Melton and you’ll be in the right ballpark.

The first track ‘Wizards of Krull’ is a straight up hard stoner jam, which is followed by the epic ‘The Starlit Grotto’ which starts quieter and gradually builds into an ominous churn with ritualistic vocals and a bit of a Master Musicians of Bukkake feel, which continues in the haunting bonus track ‘Asleep’ with a sparse, clanking, bone-rattling repeato doom riff slowly hammering away at your subconscious, with some harsh, evil-sounding slow-wah drift crackling and shrieking away towards the end. Simultaneously brutal and soothing psychedelic invocations from a band with a name so self-explanatory that reviews seem redundant.
