8/10 Phil Staff review, 18 October 2012
I don’t know these guys. I don’t really know anyone we sell. I just know of them. What I’m trying to say (badly) is I’ve not heard of these guys before. Hey one of them isn’t even a man. I’ve suddenly come over all useless...
Ned Collette (the chap) is from Melbourne and he is joined by Joe Talia (the lady who is in charge of all things musique concrete) for an album which has just come out on the Fire label. When these folks play live they use nylon string guitar, drums, samples, tape manipulation and their voices. Which sounds about a million miles away from what this sounds like. It’s pretty commercial sounding (yet a little dark) pop music with a strummy acoustic guitar and some deep vocals from Ned. I’m not sure what I make of it but on second listen it’s catchy. It (weirdly) sounds like it’s Australian (like some Aussie music does). The synths add something extra to it and overall it’s a decent tune. Nice long instrumental ending as well which I’m always a sucker for!
Addendum: It has since emerged that Joe Talia is in fact a man. In Phil's defence he was confused by the sleeve, which has a picture of a man and a woman on it. Mind-bottling.
