6/10 Clinton Staff review, 05 October 2012
This is the new album from Diva Dompe (ex-Black Black and Pocahaunted). Its a mish mash of skewed R’n’B and failed dancefloor classics recorded in a wholly cut and paste manner. The production values are kind of Shalamar or Imagination with slinky lo-fi grooves, dysfunctional drum machine and the oddest of special effects thrown in.The vocals are a little strained and loud in the mix for my liking but there’s a few treats in store for your discerning 1980s dancefloor types. ‘Inverted Image’ for example is a lovely slinky smoocher full of melancholic synths and keening vocals. I’m liking the lo-fidelity beats of ‘Smooth Ride’ which smoothly brings in the most horrendous sax solo, you have to wonder, however, where the line is drawn between re-working the best bits of your ‘80s memories and what is undoubtedly unmitigated shit. This album straddles line, sometimes enjoyable, sometimes very annoying indeed.
