8/10 Clinton Staff review, 28 September 2012
Melodic started off as a dancey type label for the post-Fourtet brand of backpack knob twiddlers but you could say that these days their roster is pretty much ‘owt. The press for Dark Dark Dark’s new album suggests Mazzy Star and Grizzly Bear, cool names to drop but they bear absolutely no relation to this album.
The sound is much more akin to early Kate Bush (first two albums) in that it’s piano-led, singer songwriter stuff with wild mood and tempo changes, the ‘riverdance’ section on the title track is particularly ill-advised but the rest of the track is fairly enjoyable. Same with ‘Tell Me’ which sounds like an earthier, more organic Beach House. ‘The Last Time I Saw Joe’ is a typically wordy effort, rambling around like a sedated Fiery Furnaces. It’s all very earnest and wordy, within the first few tracks Roger Miller and Patsy Cline’s names have been dropped, in that respect it tries a little too hard, but fans of darkly monochrome chamber folk will find plenty to enjoy here.
