9/10 Phil Staff review, 07 September 2012
We’ve sold bucketloads of Django Django records and this is the first time I’ve heard ‘em. I kept wanting to hear the album but every time I went to play it the cupboards were bare as we couldn’t keep the thing in bloody stock! This ‘Hail Bop’ thingamajiggy is a limited 12” and I believe it’s the album opener and the live favourite everyone loves. You get the album version, two remixes by Jealov and Daniel Avery and a Bullion mix of Skies Over Cairo. So there’s your facts!
I’ll start by saying ‘Hail Bop’ is officially a nice tune. It’s psychedelic indie rock of sorts with an electronic edge. Nice harmonised vocals wrapped around a Rolling Stones riff with a wonky Beta Band-ish feel to it. In fact it very much reminds me of them having a fight with the Happy Mondays or something. It’s insanely catchy as well which bodes well as I’m on my second listen and I now want to hear the album more than anything. I’ve no idea of what the remixes are like and I’ve no intention of playing ‘em as I’m sure none will be anywhere as good as the lead track.
