8/10 Clinton Staff review, 21 September 2012
Michael Kiwanuka is one of those rare instances of a musician who has been heavily hyped, Jools Holland appearance under his belt before he’s even had a single out but certainly has something about him. His music harks back to the 1970s gentle soul man; Bill Withers, Terry Caller, that type of man.
His latest single is a bit more of your obvious ‘70s reggae-lite type thing and less of the finger picked folk which of course is not a good thing. It may well appeal to fans of Amy Winehouse, it has that real-deal soulful thing going on - his voice is of course lower than hers. I’m also reminded of ‘Reet Petite’ for some reason. Remember the ‘hilarious’ video? Brill! Solid, classic sounding stuff but doesn’t really prick my pipe.
