- Palindrome Hunches by Neil Halstead

Musing as I do late at night, with the help of a couple of Mark Kozelek videos I started pondering the art of the singer songwriter and how, sometimes, it just catches you but then the next guy comes along and it’s all ‘meh’...passes by in an instant.
Neil Halstead is not without history, he was in the lauded shoegaze group Slowdive and successfully forged a second career with Mojave 3 whose excellent ‘Spoon and Rafter’ album is still a favourite on my particular turntable. Now he’s a sensitive, slightly countryfied singer songwriter with impeccably gentle, tasteful arrangements. He also has a great big beard, the de rigeur facial setting for the post Elliott Smith brigade.
It’s fair to say that Halstead does have the ‘chops’ to take his songwriting to the hearts and minds of his listeners, tracks like ‘Spin the Bottle’ are melodically suave, with an instantly recognisable melody that recalls the early downbeat Richard Buckner, everything is plucked so gently that it’s all barely there but as a result has a late night fireside charm.
‘Tied to You’ and ‘Love is a Beast’ both head towards a Nick Drake direction with husky voice and a Robert Kirby-esque string arrangements. Both are excellently chilling compositions, just perfect for the impending wintery dark nights.
