6/10 Clinton Staff review, 27 June 2013
On being presented with my reviewing pile this morning my face slumped. Lots of very difficult music which I have to pretend to be enthusiastic about. The first of which is this incredibly bleak offering from Sutekh Hexen, two of which are originals, two of which are reimaginings by West Yorkshire-based Andrew Liles (Nurse With Wound, Current 93 collaborator).
The opener (a Liles reworking) is a barrage of thoroughly depressing piano twinkles with an underlying threat of violence. The original is even more terrifying with a pounding beat and the sound of muffled screams beneath. Eventually cut-up voices enter the fray making it even more scary and oppressive.
The older I get the less time I have for unpalatable music. This is not the type of music on which memories are made. Instead, its the soundtrack to a long, slow and grizzly death.
